Proposed Boundary Changes: Learn more and share your opinion

Proposed 2027-2028 Boundary Changes

KCKPS is reviewing proposed school boundary changes that could affect where students attend school beginning in the 2027–2028 school year.

These recommendations come from the District Boundary Committee, which has been studying enrollment patterns across our district. The goal is to create school boundaries that:

  • Balance student enrollment across schools
  • Align enrollment with each building’s capacity
  • Improve efficiency, equity, and long-term sustainability

We know boundary changes are a big decision for families. This page outlines the proposed recommendations and provides information on upcoming public forums where you can learn more and share your feedback.

Proposed Changes
The proposed boundary changes are designed to balance enrollment across all grade levels, align feeder patterns with high school clusters, and prepare for new school buildings set to open in 2027–2028. At the high school level, adjustments would reduce overcrowding at Wyandotte and boost enrollment at Schlagle. Middle school changes prepare for the new Argentine and Central buildings while easing enrollment at Carl B. Bruce. For elementary schools, the plan relieves crowding at several sites and transitions students into a new school that will replace Noble Prentis, Silver City, and potentially New Stanley. Together, these changes impact students districtwide while ensuring schools are used efficiently, equitably, and sustainably.

High School Boundary Changes

To better balance enrollment across our high schools, the proposed boundary changes would shift some elementary schools into new feeder patterns. These adjustments aim to reduce Wyandotte High School’s enrollment, increase Schlagle High School’s enrollment, and keep each school within its ideal capacity range. The changes also prioritize stronger feeder alignment, improved transportation routes, and neighborhood cohesion, with an estimated impact on about 243 incoming ninth-grade students.

Key Objectives

  • Decrease Wyandotte High enrollment (committee goal of 1,600 students or less)
    • Current enrollment is over 1,900 students (~110% utilized)
  • Increase Schlagle High enrollment (committee goal of 1,000 students or more)
    • Current enrollment is less than 900 students (~80% utilized)
  • Maintain as much of a complete feeder as possible (prioritize logical breaks)
  • Improve transportation and neighborhood cohesiveness in boundaries

Proposed Changes (overview, not a complete list)

  • Quindaro Elementary changes to feed Gloria Willis Middle and Schlagle High School
    • Currently feeds Carl Bruce Middle and Wyandotte High School
  • Whittier Elementary changes to feed Rosedale Middle and Harmon High School
    • Currently feeds Central Middle and Wyandotte High School
  • Grant Elementary changes to feed Central Middle and Wyandotte High School
    • Currently feeds Rosedale Middle and Harmon High School

Impact on Enrollment

  • All schools utilized within ideal range (70-100% of capacity)
    • Wyandotte High enrollment forecasted to be around 1,550 students
    • Schlagle High enrollment forecasted to be around 1,050 students
  • Approximately 243 high school students (grade 9) impacted in this boundary adjustment

School Impacts

  • Harmon Cluster
    • Complete feeder alignment from elementary to high school
    • Lost Grant Elementary
    • Gained Whittier Elementary
  • Schlagle Cluster
    • Slightly split feeder with Washington High
    • Gained Quindaro Elementary
  • Washington Cluster
    • Slightly split feeder with Schlagle High
    • No change to feeder schools
  • Wyandotte Cluster
    • Complete feeder alignment from elementary to high school
    • Lost Quindaro and Whittier Elementary
    • Gained Grant Elementary

Committee Considered: High School Map (Draft)
This draft map shows the high school boundary adjustments proposed by the District Boundary Committee. The shaded areas represent the new attendance zones for Washington (Blue), Schlagle (Orange), Wyandotte (Pink), and J.C. Harmon (Green) high schools, with the goal of balancing enrollment, improving feeder patterns, and aligning school capacity with student needs.

Middle School Boundary Changes

For middle schools, the proposed boundary changes prepare for the opening of new Argentine and Central buildings while addressing schools that are over capacity, such as Carl B. Bruce Middle. The adjustments align feeder patterns with the high school clusters, balance enrollment across schools, and ensure all middle schools fall within their ideal utilization range. About 346 incoming sixth-grade students would be impacted, including 70 who will attend one of the new schools.

Key Objectives

  • Plan for the opening of the new Argentine and Central middle schools
  • Address schools that are outside of their ideal enrollment/utilization range
    • Carl B. Bruce Middle (830 to 900 students, ~105% utilized)
  • Implement adjustments to align with High School cluster (feeder) changes

Proposed Changes (overview, not a complete list)

  • Reduction of Carl Bruce boundary to decrease enrollment and align with cluster adjustments
  • Adjustment between Central and Rosedale boundaries to align with cluster adjustments
  • Adjustment between Gloria Willis and Eisenhower boundaries to align with cluster adjustments

Impact on Enrollment

  • All schools utilized within ideal range (70-100% of capacity)
    • Carl Bruce Middle reduced to around 675 students (~80% utilization)
  • Approximately 346 middle school students (grade 5) impacted in this adjustment
    • 70 of those students would be attending one of the new middle schools
  • Schools with NO IMPACT on student population (may see new students, but existing students stay):
    • Arrowhead Middle

School Impacts

  • Harmon Cluster Middle Schools
    • Argentine Middle (New Building)
    • Rosedale Middle
  • Schlagle Cluster Middle Schools
    • Gloria Willis Middle (split)
  • Washington Cluster Middle Schools
    • Arrowhead Middle
    • D.D. Eisenhower Middle
  • Wyandotte Cluster Middle Schools

    • Central Middle (New Building)

Committee Considered: Middle School Map (Draft)
This draft map shows the middle school boundary adjustments proposed by the District Boundary Committee. The shaded areas represent the new attendance zones for Argentine (new building) (darker green), Arrowhead (darker orange), Carl B. Bruce (yellow), Central (new building) (blue), Eisenhower (pink), Gloria Willis (lighter green), and Rosedale (tan) Middle schools, with the goal of balancing enrollment, improving feeder patterns, and aligning school capacity with student needs.

Elementary School Boundary Changes

At the elementary level, the proposed boundary changes plan for a new school opening in 2027–2028 that will combine Noble Prentis, Silver City, and possibly New Stanley boundaries. These changes also help relieve overcrowding at several schools currently above capacity and realign feeder patterns with the high school clusters. In total, about 617 K–2 students would be impacted, with roughly half moving to the new elementary school.

Key Objectives

  • Plan for the opening of the new elementary school to open in 2027/28
    • Combination of Noble Prentis and Silver City elementary boundaries
    • At this time, the Board has decided to remove New Stanley from consideration for consolidation into the New Elementary.
  • Address schools that are outside of their ideal enrollment/utilization range
    • Claude Huyck (+110% utilized), Grant (+108%), John F. Kennedy (+105% utilized)
  • Implement adjustments to align with High School cluster (feeder) changes

Proposed Changes (overview, not a complete list)

  • Noble Prentis and Silver City combined at the new elementary or Emerson Elementary
  • Reduction of Claude Huyck and John F. Kennedy elementary boundaries to balance enrollment within Washington Cluster
  • Reduction of Bertram Caruthers, Grant, and Quindaro boundaries to align with cluster adjustments and balance enrollment within Wyandotte Cluster

Impact on Enrollment

  • Most schools utilized within ideal range (70-100% of capacity)
  • Approximately 617 elementary students (grades K-2) impacted in this adjustment
    • 320 of those students would be attending the new elementary school
  • Schools with NO IMPACT on student population (may see new students, but existing students stay):
    • Banneker, Douglass, Eugene Ware, Frank Rushton, Hazel Grove, John Fiske, Lindbergh, Lowell Brune, Mark Twain, McKinley, Stony Point North, Stony Point South, T.A. Edison, Welborn, West Park, and Whittier elementary schools
